Siemens and Esri partner to take network planning and operations to a new level

  • Based in CaliforniaEsri, a pioneer in geographic information system software
  • Geodata Combined with Siemens Modeling and Simulation Software Drives the Creation of a Holistic Digital Twin of the Network for Real-Time Planning, Simulation and Operations to accelerate the energy transition
  • Complementary product partners are part of the Siemens Xcelerator ever-evolving partner ecosystem to accelerate digital transformation

Siemens Smart Infrastructure has partnered with Esri, the world leader in geographic information systems (GIS) and location intelligence, to expand its partner ecosystem for its grid software business. The partnership improves power grid planning, operation and maintenance capabilities at grid operators by combining Esri’s powerful mapping and spatial analysis software with Siemens expertise in electrical topology. In doing so, companies aim to improve the flow of data between applications for increased planning accuracy and for better operation of the distribution network. The goal of the partnership is to improve the admission of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to the grid so that net zero can be achieved faster.

The news follows the recent launch of Siemens’ Grid Software Suite, an open and interoperable suite of world-class software that creates a holistic digital twin for planning, operating and maintaining power grids. The suite is part of Siemens Xcelerator, an open digital business platform to accelerate digital transformation and value creation. Building a partner ecosystem with complementary products is a core part of Siemens Xcelerator, enabling easier, faster, and large-scale digital transformation.

“Through this strategic partnership, Siemens and Esri will jointly innovate in grid software by bringing together the best of our two worlds,” said Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Grid Software at Siemens Smart Infrastructure. “Esri will be part of an ecosystem of equally strong energy industry partners who can drive change to shape the networks of the future toward a 100% renewable world.”

Jeff Rashid, Global Director of Infrastructure at Esri, said, “Combining a major data source such as GIS with Siemens Grid modeling and simulation software will significantly improve the quality of network models for utilities. We are working to streamline data transfer between our GIS and Siemens software resulting in a much higher performing system, much more reliable data exchange between systems and a reduction in the overall cost of data management.”

As the rapid growth of DER and eMobility charging infrastructure fundamentally transforms the energy system, the cooperation between Siemens and Esri will help Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) find answers to increasing challenges across their geographic power grids.
